The Silent Majority
Amelie, Mallary, and Miranda

Amelie: (Wilfred Browning Sr)
Teenagers these days are going OUT OF CONTROL! My wife, Alison and I have raised Will to his highest potential. We have done everything for him, sent him to a good school, had him involved in sports, but everything is changing! There have been colored kids being bused from other neighborhoods and are now going to Will’s school. This is changing the culture of his school, and now he is befriending them? I don’t know what to do. The war is going on and there is a possibility that he will be drafted next year once he turns 18, but running off with these new kids who are setting a bad example for him is not going to change anything! All Will has been talking about is peace and the protests that he and his new hippie friends are putting on in the streets. He is still a child who needs to stay in school and have a normal life. All of these hippies are going to San Francisco sit around getting high off LSD all day. Why can’t he get through his thick head that this Timothy Leery is persuading people to drop out of high school, college, and grad school and just get fried all day? This man is not someone that Will should be looking up to for guidance and wisdom, he has parents for that. He has a ton of potential but he is being brainwashed by all of this non sense! Will has been drawing peace signs on the walls of his room and is starting to wear a necklace to symbolize “a life where we can live gently in the world without war”. I have just about been done with all of this foolishness and nonsense. We don’t know what to do with him now. He is out of control. At the rate he is going, he is going to end up getting some girl knocked up, and I am too young to be considered a grandfather. Also those hippies are being malnourished, are getting hepatitis, and are over dosing on this LSD that at the kids think is so "far out". There has to be something that I can do. If we discipline him, he is just going to run away with his friends and become just like them. I don’t know who this kid is anymore, but he’s not my son.

Miranda: (Alison Browning)

Hello. My name is Alison Browning and I am absolutely appalled at what is going on in this country and what the government is doing. I am especially appalled because my family is taking part in the conflict with the war in Vietnam and the bussing of students to other schools. My son, Will Browning, is 17 years old, and doesn’t need to be involved with any of those colored kids coming to his school and changing his culture and his behavior. He doesn’t need to be getting involved with any of those drugs like LSD and hanging out with all the shaggies. I don’t want him going off and having sex with all the hippy women and becoming a father before he graduates high school! Also, he is 17 years old, which is only one year away until he is 18. Next year, he could be drafted into the war in Vietnam, which is not something any parent wants for her son’s future. But if he is, I should support him in the war. I will not be protesting on the streets like radical majority of the country. We need to have peace in this world, not violence. I am certainly not going to be voicing my opinion in public out on the streets because I do not believe that is the way to go. I believe that we should support the troops in Vietnam and stop the racial riots and protests. As for my son, I want the busing to stop immediately. I can already see his future going down the toilet and see him being a father at 18. The government is not making good choices and I think that all the violence needs to stop so that people can live their lives peacefully without concern and without worry or fear.

Mallary: (Wilfred Browning Jr, Will)
The name is Wilfred Browning Jr., but my friends call me Will. I am 17 years old and I live in Montgomery. Blacks are being sent to our high school, Montgomery High, from Frogville because we are being forced to hang with the blacks in our neighborhood. Thanks to the bussing system, I’ve met some neat people. We have been helping out with the protests on the streets because we just want to give peace a chance . I don’t get why everyone is so against this. My old man and old lady think that my new friends are a “bad” influence on me, but really I don’t see how they could be. There is so much going on right now, I think the best thing to do is if we all listen to Timothy Leery then everything will result in peace. I’m hoping I don’t get drafted into the war because I’ll be old enough to fight, and fighting would be the worst thing to do if we want peace in our world. My parents are against all this and they need to hang loose. I’m super bummed about them telling me what to do. If they keep bugging me I’m going to freak out and ill just become a flower child like everyone else and just hitch a bus to San Francisco. I’m tired of them telling me what to do. I’m not a child anymore and I can make my own decisions.
